The Icelandic horse is a small, almost pony-sized breed, that came to the island with Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries. The horses are known to be hardy and have a double coat. The Icelandic horse has five gaits and due to its small size it is both well balanced and smooth to ride.
There are numerous operations offering horseback riding tours in Iceland, both for beginners and more advanced riders.
